"R Tape loading error": when the Spectrum won't load
The R Tape loading error, 0:1 message is a classic. Most of the time the problem is not the computer: it is the volume, the player's head or the alignment.

The essentials
- 10Volume: neither at minimum nor at maximum. Start in the middle and adjust until the stripes in the screen border are regular.
- 20Tone: on players with a tone control, turn the treble up to maximum.
- 30Head: clean the read head and the rubber pinch roller with isopropyl alcohol.
- 40Cables: try another cable and check that it is plugged into EAR and not MIC.
- 50Cassette: wind it all the way to the end and back to the start, to loosen the tape.
Head alignment (azimuth)
If cassettes recorded on another player won't load on yours, the head may be misaligned. Many players have a small screw next to the head for adjusting the azimuth. Using a cassette you know is good, turn it just a little at a time, while listening to the sound or watching the stripes, until the signal becomes clearer.
On the +2 and +2A the player is the built-in Datacorder: the belts and rubber rollers usually need replacing after all these years.
Alternatives
For everyday use, there are devices that play cassette files (TZX/TAP) from a memory card, and interfaces such as the DivMMC, which load games from an SD card in seconds.
