Amiga 500 · rev 5

Rev 5 has 16 electrolytics, all through-hole radials. The values come from the Commodore parts list and schematic [1][2]. The positions were measured on the Commodore board drawing [1] and may be out by 2 to 3 mm.

Before you start

  • There are no SMD electrolytics here, only through-hole radials [1], and the A500 is not on the amigawiki list of machines with leaking SMD parts [3]. A recap is not as urgent as on an A600 or an A1200: replace them if they are bulging, leaking or if there are symptoms.
  • Always work with the power supply unplugged from the mains and from the board. The external power supply has its own capacitors, which are not on this list, and the 230 V side is not something to open at home.
  • On rev 5, C811 is 100 µF and C812 to C815 are 47 µF 35 V [1]. On rev 6A they become six 100 µF parts, C811 to C816. Check the board revision before ordering a kit.
  • The rev 5 parts list has a typo: it lists C307 under both 22 µF and 100 µF and leaves out C324. The schematic settles it: C307 is 100 µF and C324 is 22 µF [1].
  • The Commodore drawing marks the + of each electrolytic [1]. Photograph the board before removing the old ones and fit the new ones the same way round.
  • The rev 5 list only gives the voltage of the 3300 µF parts. The others can be worked out from the Commodore part number, which is the same in the rev 6A list [1]. The replacement can have the same or a higher voltage, never lower. If you find broken traces or damaged chips, bring the board to the shop.

Recap at the shop

We replace the capacitors, clean off the electrolyte and check the traces before returning the machine.
