Amiga 3000 · rev 9.03

Rev 9.03 has 32 through-hole radial electrolytics, all in the Commodore parts list and schematic [1][2] and in the Amiga-Wiki list [3]. The positions come from ReAmiga's 1:1 copy of rev 9.3 [4][5] and were checked against a photograph of the board [7], but they are not from a Commodore drawing: always confirm the reference on the silkscreen.

32 capacitors

Before you start

  • Before the capacitors, the battery. The A3000 comes from the factory with a rechargeable NiCd battery, 3.6 V 60 mAh (BT190) [1], which leaks with age. The liquid attacks the surrounding components and the traces, and can be hidden under parts that look intact; the Amiga-Wiki assumes that every A3000 that still has it is already affected [8]. If yours is still there, remove it as soon as possible or bring the machine to the shop so we can replace it and treat the corrosion.
  • The A3000's power supply is internal. Always work with the power cable unplugged from the mains, and don't open the power supply: the 230 V side is not something to work on at home. This list covers the main board only.
  • There are no SMD electrolytics here, only through-hole radials [1][3]. They don't leak like the SMD ones on an A600 or A1200, but they are over 30 years old: replace them if they are bulging, leaking, or if there are symptoms.
  • The Commodore schematic gives 16 V for almost all of them [1]; the Amiga-Wiki asks for 35 V for the 4.7 and 22 µF ones [3]. We follow Commodore. A replacement with the same or a higher voltage is fine, if it fits in the same space; a lower one, never.
  • C407 and C416 sit side by side next to Paula and have their references swapped depending on the source: see the notes for each. Go by size: the big one is the 470 µF.
  • The daughterboard (for the Zorro slots) has four more axial electrolytics, C600 to C603, 220 µF 16 V [2][3]. They are not on this map.
  • We left out the tantalum C483 (10 µF), because no source gives the original voltage, and C487 and C488, which the parts list gives as 1.0 µF tantalums but the Commodore schematic and ReAmiga give as 1000 pF [1][4][5].
  • The map is for rev 9.03. Rev 9 was the last production board; before it came 6.x, 7.x and 8.x [6], with a different layout: the rev 7.0 drawing that comes with the Commodore schematics [1] has the components in other places. The Amiga-Wiki gives the same list of values for rev 9.02 [3]. If you find broken traces or damaged chips, bring the board to the shop.
